I trained in mechanical and electrical engineering in the US and Canada, with a doctorate from McGill. My work combines advanced automation and applied cryptography.

I approach conflict as a sequence that can be reconstructed: what happened, what followed, what was known at each moment, and where interpretation began to run ahead of the facts.

Founder of Ikatu, Khimo, and Privnote. Khimo develops control, media and cloud systems for homes and commercial spaces; Privnote, a pioneering service for self-destructing messages, has served millions of users since 2008.

A house that listens and a message that disappears are the same question asked twice. Privacy protects more than what others can see: it is a condition of freedom of thought.

Under the alias jikatu I develop a photographic body of work, published under Creative Commons and used internationally. My photographs illustrate the whole of Los 7 Elementos y el Hombre; several were commissioned for the book. Photographing is deciding what enters the frame. What stays outside was decided too.

Reason Under Siege (Ikatu, 2027) grew out of years of op-eds and conversations. It brings twenty thinkers, from Heraclitus to Arendt, before the forces that bear upon judgment when taking a side is already expected: technology, memory, and the verdict that arrives before the sequence is complete.

My grandparents reached Montevideo from Širvintos, in Lithuania. I tell part of that story in One Letter Short.
